Works were mostly focused on AP242 : schedule, domains to be addressed for Edition 1 and for Edition 2 of AP242.
Some topics require a particular attention, being of strategic interest and needed for availability as soonest with the best possible level of functionality.
Datakit participates in CAX-IF forum as well as in prospective work groups, in particular on semantic PMI, on visualization (performant tessellation), on descriptions of assemblies (detailed references between items of different models which are part of an assembly) : by proposals, prototyping, interopérability tests.
In order to propose in time a STEP solution providing the best coverage, based on AP242.

Simplification of the conversion of native CAD to OpenCascade
June 28, 2011 |
 |
Datakit now provides CAD readers to OpenCascade in a new form, for easier integration, extension, maintenance and use :
- One unique DLL for all readers
- Common call form for all formats, actually supported and to come
- Simple use, easy integration in user application
The previous call forms (specific of each CAD format) are kept unchanged, and new call forms are common to all CADs : querying file type (which CAD), checking if the reader is active for it, performing the conversion to OpenCascade.
Supported data :
- Parts and assemblies
- 3D Geometry as BREP solids, surfacic models, wireframe
- With attributes : name, color, layer...
Maintenance :
These readers rely on the CAD import and export solutions developed by Datakit, it is regularly updated to follow the evolutions of these formats.
They are designed to be ported providing constant quality of result, on various versions of OpenCascade and on various platforms.
Datakit's CAD readers to OpenCascade support these CAD formats :

DATAKIT participates in LOTAR works, focusing on PMI.
March 24, 2010 |
 |
An initiative to propose a new evolution of STEP has been promoted by the LOTAR group, especially to improve the capabilities of STEP to address the needs of long term archiving of CAD data.
In the frame of LOTAR, DATAKIT participates in the work team in charge of PMI, to determine and validate solutions to archive and retrieve PMI data (semantic description and graphic display) with STEP.
In this frame, DATAKIT has performed studies to check mapping for PMI between existing data in native CADs and STEP descriptions, and performed implementation of STEP writing and reading of PMI, based on the last evolution of STEP AP203 : AP203E2.
We have then validated the capabilities of STEP in matter of PMI, determined the needs for evolution to come, prepared the enhancement of our solutions for STEP reading and writing.
Results of these studies and prototypes have been presented and discussed in a LOTAR workshop which has held on March 15 to 17, 2010, jointly with CAX-IF forum and PDES offsite.

Datakit Processes CADDS parametric
November 24, 2009 |
CADDS, a CAD/CAM software widely used in the shipbuilding and aeronautical domains, usesCADDS, a CAD/CAM software widely used in the shipbuilding and aeronautical domains, uses two ways to save their data:
- _pd (CADDS native explicit part files), - _fd (CADDS 5 native Parametric part files),
Our experience and our knowledge of CADDS format now enable us to use the parametric format in addition to explicit so as to recover surfaces and volumes data.
Our CADDS translators include this new reading, in CrossCAD/STA and CrossCAD/PLG, as well as our next translator CrossManager.

Datakit takes part to the LOTAR workgroup
June 29, 2009 |
 |
Datakit has been invited to join the LOTAR (LOng Term Archiving & Retention) workgroup, to work on the extension of the STEP norm for the needs of long-term CAD data archiving.
The LOTAR was born from the needs to ensure the validity and the continued existence of CAD data on a long-term basis. For projects that would spread on very long periods, CAD data has to be readable and usable, even decades after their creation.
From this point of view, the STEP standard seems the most appropriate solution, for it meets these needs, whatever software or machine are used.
Datakit’s high implication in this area (especially by its part taking in forums such as the CAx-IF), and its competences in a matter of CAD data exchange, have convinced the LOTAR of the advantage of including Datakit in their work.

Interview F Cadin - Blog Novedge
September 27, 2007 |
 |
Francis Cadin is the CEO and founder of Datakit, the French company specialized in CAD data translation. Datakit products come in two different flavors: some translators perform their sensitive tasks embedded under the hood of a software program while others come as plug-ins or standalone applications. Nowadays the CAD data translation seems to be less problematic than in the past. While the CAD market consolidation certainly made things easier, most of the credit goes to companies like Datakit and to people like Francis Cadin. Novedge asked him to share his experience and opinions on this topic. Here is the interview.
